As an Illustrator, my
inspiration comes from science, history and nature. To some people these topics
may be a bit stagnant, but my aim is to inspire viewers to stop and reconsider
and see the wonder that is all around us. I strive to make references,
connections and commentary on these subjects through amusing and playful illustrations. My process always starts with
extensive research for source information and images. Through several drafts of
sketches, a composition unfolds and it is put to Bristol board. I prefer to use
a mixture of watercolor or gouache with colored pencil; I also enjoy using
graphite or pen and ink. My work usually incorporates vivid colors (when
working with color) and high contrast. There is something uniquely
special about creating a tangible outcome that you have imagined in your mind;
seeing it from conception to completion. I feel as if I am truly myself when I
am engaged in the act of art-making. It is a magical feeling.
